New adventures

Hi there,

after blogging quite randomly, I decided to come back to posting on a regular basis. On a weekly basis, actually. I created a new blog http://petralange.wordpress.com/ (which is in German, nevermind), where I am going to post a painting a week. In fact there will be portraits of animals. Animals, which I find are having more potential than people might think.
I am talking of animals we usually think of as food or food producers, i.e., cattle, sheep, etc. I guess they don't deserve that. Maybe my paintings help develop other ways of looking at those creatures - i.e., finding out that they all are conscious minds ;)

nachdem ich in der letzten Zeit recht unregelmäßig gebloggt habe, entschied ich mich dazu, wieder regelmäßig zu posten. Und zwar wöchentlich. Ich habe einen neuen Blog kreiert http://petralange.wordpress.com/ wo ich jede Woche ein Gemälde veröffentlichen werde. Es werden Tierportraits sein, und zwar von solchen Tieren, die wir Menschen eher als Nahrungsmittelproduzenten ansehen, z.B. Kühe oder Ziegen. Ich denke, diese Tiere verdienen das nicht. Möglicherweise helfen meine Bilder dabei, einen anderen Blick auf diese Lebewesen zu entwickeln - zu entdecken, dass es sich tatsächlich um Wesen mit Bewusstsein handelt ;)

Hello there, I'm back!

I was lazy with this second blog of mine. I promise I'll do better ;)

Now here's what I'd like to share with you: the strange evolution of painting excellence. Sounds really weird, maybe the English translation is a bit out of place ... However, I hope you understand what I mean.

This is the last painting for my challenge blog: Ich sehe was, wie du nicht siehst.

It took me three attempts to make this successful one.

Just look at that:

The first one is kind of timid (also due to the use of watercolors - seems to not be my favorite type of paint). I know some people like that kind of style, but it's not what I'd like to achieve in my work. The painting should have reflected movement and a personal color design. Unfortunately there is no movement at all, and the colors are more or less a copy of the photo's colors. So for my work it is quite helpful to use a black and white copy as a reference.

I won't post the second approach to this painting because I've already overpainted it ;) It was a desaster! Painting for many hours I finally realized: It's all a mess! Guess the time just wasn't right, or the light or whatever. But I didn't give up, and the next one (on the next day) was just incredibly easily done. Two hours or so - finished.

You might imagine my relief after the exhausting and unseccessful painting day before.

Maybe you've experienced a similar process? It shows the importance of not giving up :))))

Selbst I

I started a new series of paintings: self portraits. This is the first one. It somehow resembles me, but not exactly. That's ok, because in this series my focus is to create a loose painting with an intense mood. It worked out quite well, I think!

Ich habe mit einer neuen Serie begonnen, diesmal sind es Selbstportraits.
Hier seht ihr das erste Werk. Es sieht mir schon ähnlich, aber nicht exakt. Das ist völlig in Ordnung, denn ich möchte möglichst lockere Bilder mit einer intensiven Stimmung kreieren. Ich bin ganz froh über das Ergebnis, denn so in etwa habe ich mir das vorgestellt!

Yes, finally! I am back after a longer break. Maybe some of you have followed my other challenge blog http://www.ichsehewaswiedunichtsiehst.blogspot.com/ where you can find some of my current works.

During summer I joined an artistic four-day-workshop in Hamburg that was located in the industrial part of the harbour. There was also a maritime museum where I found a very fascinating object to paint from and so I developed a series devoted to this special diving helmet/suit.
I like the mystery of the underwater world that is represented by this item. Can you imagine how those guys wearing the suit feel? They carry heavy weights and are completely dependent on the equipment ... I myself own a diving brevet, so I can at least to a certain extent relate to that.
Some of these paintings should carry that idea, although not all (the pink diver maybe has something else to tell).

This is the result of a simple photo of a building. I really got into the painting process which took me here and there to eventually become something that might be called "surreal".

Das entstand nach einer einfachen Fotovorlage eines Gebäudes. Ich habe mich so richtig auf den Malprozess eingelassen - der führte mich von hier nach dort um letztlich in einem surrealen Gemälde zu enden.

It seems to me that color is becoming more and more important in my paintings. This also explains why I am so fascinated by the colorful shelves with artist's material in the stores ;)

Es scheint so, als würde die Farbe in meinen Bildern immer wichtiger werden. Das erklärt auch meine Faszination für die bunten Regale mit Künstlerfarben im Fachmarkt ;)

Orange County

In this painting I focused on the orange "blossoms" of the desert plants. I like their patterns, but color is equally important to me. The glowing orange complements the blue sky. To add interest, I used a bit of pink in the far background and also on some leaves in the foreground.

In diesem Bild habe ich die Blüten mit ihrem typischen Muster hervorgehoben. Natürlich waren mir auch die Farben wichtig - die orangen Blüten stehen im starken Kontrast zum blauen Himmel. Damit die Farbkomposition aber nicht zu "krass" wurde, habe ich noch etwas Pink im Hintergrund benutzt. Dieses findet sich auch auf einigen Blättern im Vordergrund wieder, um das Gesamtbild harmonischer erscheinen zu lassen.

This is the result of my last painting challenge.
I focused on the composition. I think composition is the key to a successful painting. When I had art lessons at school I never understood the secret of good composition. The teacher just didn't know how to explain it, I guess ... But fortunately today I know about it. For everyone interested I recommend the book "The simple secret to better painting" by Greg Albert. Now the secret is out :)

Dies ist das Ergebnis meiner letzten künstlerischen Challenge, die Äpfel. Ich habe mich besonders auf die Komposition konzentriert. Meiner Meinung nach ist eine gute Komposition der Schlüssel zu einem erfolgreichen Bild. Ich erinnere mich noch gut an meinen Kunstunterricht in der Schule. Es wurde immer viel Blabla über die Kompositionen alter Meister gemacht, aber erklärt wurde das Geheimnis einer guten Komposition nie. Heute bin ich zum Glück schlauer. Für alle Interessierten empfehle ich das Buch (allerdings auf Englisch) von Greg Albert, "The simple secret to better painting". Wirklich sehr hilfreich!!

Incidentally pears

Now here comes the explanation to these pears: Maybe you've already seen that I posted them as an entry for the new challenge of Lela Stankovic, http://paintanddrawtogether.blogspot.com/ and thought, well, they don't really seem to be a result of the photo. This is true, I painted them without any reference, it was just a new approach. I had no idea what to paint and suddenly I decided to create pears. Only some hours ago, I found out about the new blog through Claire Carnell's site, and realized that I had unconsciously painted the same subject! Great, I thought, I'll send the piece and be part of another painting journey!

Hier kommt die Erläuterung zu diesen Birnen: Vielleicht hat ja schon jemand entdeckt, dass dieses Bild auf dem neuen Challenge Blog von Lela Stankovic, http://paintanddrawtogether.blogspot.com/ hochgeladen wurde, und wundert sich, wieso mein Beitrag aussieht, als wäre er nicht das Ergebnis der Fotovorlage. Stimmt, ist er auch nicht! Also, dass war so ;) : Vor ca. 2 Wochen wollte ich mal eine neue Herangehensweise versuchen. Ich nahm mir vor, ohne Vorlage zu arbeiten, evtl. sogar abstrakt. Abstrakt hat nicht funktioniert, nach kurzer Zeit hat sich die erste Birne abgezeichnet. Nun, vor ein paar Stunden, sehe ich auf Claire Carnells Blog das Bild mit den Birnen und den Link zur Challenge. Als ich die Vorlage und die Einsendungen sehe, bin ich schon reichlich erstaunt, denn mein Birnenbild passt hier ziemlich gut - Farbgebung, Anzahl, nur eben nicht die Draufsicht. Egal, ich halte diesen Zufall für vielsagend und mache ab jetzt mit!

Ohne Titel

I wondered which title to choose for these guys, but I think there is no need for it. Just look at their faces!
Painting them was pretty easy in the first place. By the time I finished them, I realized a slight but important composition problem. The big and colorful shapes of the chicken had too much visual strength and needed to be balanced. That's when the eggs had to be introduced. By the way: the colors of the eggs are the basic colors of the whole painting. Happy Easter everyone :)

Zunächst fiel mir kein passender Titel für dieses Bild ein. Jetzt finde ich aber, dass das Bild auch keinen Titel braucht. Ein Blick auf den Gesichtsausdruck der Hühner sollte genügen!
Bei der Umsetzung gingen mir die Hühner ziemlich leicht von der Hand. Als die aber fertig waren, bemerkte ich ein deutliches visuelles Ungleichgewicht - links die großen bunten Hühnerformen und rechts? Also mussten die Eier her. Übrigens: Die Farben der Eier sind die Grundfarben des ganzen Bildes. Frohe Ostern allerseits :)

Gruppenbild mit Fisch

In this painting I was mainly interested in the repeating shapes of the boots and the reflections on the floor. When I finished painting them I realized that the center of interest was missing... I decided to add a little story by inserting the fish :)

Bei diesem Bild haben mich neben den sich wiederholenden Formen der Stiefel die Spiegelungen auf dem Boden interessiert. Nachdem ich die Gummistiefel gemalt hatte, fehlte aber irgendwie der Fokuspunkt, das gewisse "Etwas". Also habe ich mit dem Fisch eine kleine Geschichte eingebaut :)

This is my painting resulting from my last challenge. I was so fascinated by the flowing ice that this lead to two more paintings - truly a series!

Das ist mein Bild zur Challenge Eiszeit. Ich finde die Bewegungen der Eisschollen ziemlich faszinierend. Darum habe ich gleich noch zwei weitere Bilder zum Thema gemacht - eine wirkliche Serie!

More wintertime

Hi folks, as the groundhog foresees more cold weather, I did another painting regarding this subject. I found my previous one was too cold in color temperature. I am somehow fed up with icy degrees and therefore painted the same scene in a warmer color mode. I prefer this one, but now it's too late for my own painting challenge ;)

Hallo Leute, da das Murmeltier in den USA weiterhin winterliche Temperaturen ankündigt, habe ich passend zum Thema noch einmal die Winterszene gemalt. Allerdings habe ich hier wärmere Farben benutzt, denn die kalte Zeit habe ich langsam wirklich über. Mir gefällt dieses besser als die erste Version, aber um es in meinem Challenge-Blog einzufügen ist's nun zu spät ;)

Wintertime

This is my first self-made painting challenge painting! The figure looking over the bridge interested me the most. She seems to be calm and contemplative - in a winterly mood. At first she wore a brown-red coat, but I decided the colors weren't as harmonious as I wanted them to be. So if you like to compare, here is the old and no longer existing version.

Hier ist nun mein erstes selbst erstelltes Werk meiner ichsehewaswiedunichtsiehst Challenge. Die Person an der Brücke hat mich am meisten interessiert, wie sie so in ruhiger Winterstimmung die Landschaft überblickt. Zunächst hatte sie einen braunroten Mantel an, aber irgendwie wollte sich das nicht so ganz in die Harmonie einfügen. Aber trotzdem poste ich diese inzwischen übermalte Version zum Vergleich.

Poor Pierrot

A friend of mine likes the sad face of the pierrot by James Ensor which looks like this:

She asked me to do a painting that captures this impression. Well, this was a challenge, of course. At first, I doubted I could get along with this subject matter (Pierrot - ugh - not my kind of interest), but then I somehow got into a "relationship" with this sad guy and agreed to paint. In the end I did two versions. The more detailed one shown above is my (and my friend's) favorite!

I am the first!

When I first saw the foto of this challenge, I thought: okay, boring.
I am not very interested in the hurry of airport folks, and I felt a dislike against this floor pattern, but I did my best. I focused on the shapes and tried to enliven the scene with some coloring.
When I finished it, I had to admit that painting it, especially the figures, was quite fun, although it took me two attempts to get the proportions right.
But to be honest, I still don't enjoy this horrible floor pattern ;)
Now I am anticipating the year end challenge! This is a very exciting way of interacting with other artists!

So, ausnahmsweise gibt's mal wieder eine Übersetzung. Die Challenge dieser Woche hat mir auf Anhieb weniger gefallen. Flughafenläufer ... gähn. Businessdress. Und erst das Fußbodenmuster! Scheußlich. Aber ich habe mich zusammengerissen, auf die Formen geachtet und mit etwas Farbe von den schwarzen Anzügen abgelenkt. Hat auch tatsächlich Spaß gemacht. Aber das Fußbodenmuster gefällt mir noch immer nicht ;)
Und jetzt freue ich mich schon auf die kommende Portrait-Tausch-Challenge! Eine ziemlich aufregende Sache, ich kann nur jedem interessierten Künstler empfehlen mitzumachen!

I was excited right from the beginnung to paint these little things. They are so interesting to paint! But what can I say? My first attempt didn't work out at all! But I didn't give up - and after all - the second try was much better. Sometimes you just need to relax, right?

Down and up the street

I loved the distance in this week's challenge by Karin! I imagine how to "roll" down (and up) this street ;) Well, I am pretty much satisfied with the result of this one.

In der dieswöchigen Challenge ging es um eine Straße in SF, und die optische Tiefe hat mich herausgefordert. Ich stelle mir vor, wie ich die Straße "herunter- und wieder hoch rolle" ;) Ich freue mich über das Bild, es ist in etwa so geworden, wie ich es mir gewünscht habe.

Bored

Now here is the next challenge. The photo on DSFDF showed a person who to me seemed bored or hopeless, at least not active. I wanted to stress this fact. To somehow support the idea of boredom I added the ridiculous looking colors of the caps - what a nice change in life :)))

Hier ist die nächste Herausforderung. Das Vorlagenfoto auf DSFDF zeigte eine Person, die auf mich gelangweilt oder hoffnungslos wirkte, zumindest aber inaktiv.
Diese Empfindung wollte ich in dem Bild unterstreichen. Um die Idee der Langeweile zu unterstützen, habe ich den Personen die lächerlich bunten Kappen aufgesetzt. Na, das ist doch mal eine Abwechslung ;))

Landleben II

Now here is as promised the German version of "Landleben". I'd like to let you participate in the painting process:

When I look at other artist's blogs, I am always very interested in following the painting steps. I think this might reveal hints for one's work and helps to improve. So I hope this is interesting for you, too!

I did a sketch of the landscape on a nice weekend trip some miles away from my home.

I started on a canvas bord and primed it with pastel ground. Then I colored the canvas with a brown-orangy watercolor wash. After that I did the first blocking in with the long side of my soft pastels, which looked like this.

I went on working on the larger forms with adding more pigment. The sky is a dominant part of the painting, so of course I was quite interested in doing it good! Unfortunately, this didn't turn out right in the beginning, so I changed the appearance a few times. When I had almost finished the piece I thought the sky wasn't integrated enough in the painting so I added the yellow color to it. This was a good idea!

Describing the painting process in English is somehow a bit challengy for me, all these special words you have to use ... ;) Now in German, that should be easier for me:

Hier kommt wie versprochen die "deutsche" Version vom Bild "Landleben". Ich möchte euch diesmal am Malprozess teilhaben lassen. Schließlich interessiert mich das auch besonders, wenn ich z.B. andere Künstlerblogs ansehe. Ich finde es nicht nur interessant, sondern auch hilfreich. So lernt man Tricks, die einem nur weiterhelfen können. Vielleicht findet ihr das hier ja auch hilfreich :)

Zunächst habe ich eine Skizze vor Ort erstellt. Diese Szene fand sich hier ganz in der Nähe auf einer Wiese.

Angefangen habe ich das Bild mit einer Leinwand, die ich mit Pastellgrund grundiert habe. Darauf habe ich eine braun-orange Schicht Aquarellfarbe als Untermalung aufgetragen. Jetzt konnten die ersten Pastellstriche aufgetragen werden, grob natürlich, mit der Längsseite der Pastellkreiden. Diese habe ich nach und nach weiter ausgearbeitet. Der Himmel nimmt einen großen Teil des Bildes ein, also sollte er auch gut werden. Daher musste ich ihn einige Male anpassen. Am Schluss sah er zwar gut aus, passte aber nicht mehr so ganz zum übrigen Bild. Ich habe daher die gelbe Farbe des Kornfeldes auch im Himmel aufgetragen, das war's gewesen, was fehlte :)

Thinking food

This time the challenge of Karin Jurick's DSFDF - vegetables - seemed a bit "too simple" to me. I am pretty much aware of the fact that most of the challengees are perfect in producing a still life like this one, and it's true! So I decided to go a bit further. The food looks so fresh and yummy just like in the stores. But unfortunately, there is this pollution of our natural resources, AND I DON'T SUPPORT THAT AT ALL! Basta.

Dieses Mal erschien mir die Challenge von Karin Juricks DSFDF - Gemüse - etwas zu einfach. Logisch, dass die meisten der "Mitkünstler" perfekte Stillleben produzieren würden - und so ist es auch gekommen :) Also wollte ich etwas weiter gehen. Das Gemüse sieht so frisch und lecker aus, genauso wie in den Supermärkten. Doch leider gibt es diese Verseuchung unserer natürlichen Ressourcen, UND ICH UNTERSTÜTZE DAS AUF KEINEN FALL! Basta.

Landleben

This challenge was about color. We had to paint from a black and white photo and invent our own color scheme.

This wasn't new to me, it's a common way for me to start a painting. I decided on harmonious colors and (as most of the time) focused on the impression of deep space. The silos became the natural focal point painted in a contrasting hue.

I created this painting with soft pastel on canvas prepared with pastel ground. I am planning to do another one of the same size (60 x 60 cm) showing the countryside of Northern Germany ;)

Bei diesem Bild ging es darum, ein Schwarz-Weiß-Foto farbig wiederzugeben. Das war für mich nichts Neues, da ich häufiger diesen Ansatz wähle, sofern ich von einem Foto arbeite. Die zwei Silos sollten den "Focal Point" bilden, darum habe ich für diese einen kontrastierenden Farbton gewählt.
Für den Malgrund habe ich einen mit Pastellgrund grundierten Keilrahmen benutzt, auf dem ich dann mit Kreide gearbeit habe. Das ging ziemlich gut und ich werde noch ein zweites Gemälde auf diese Art herstellen, vielleicht mit einer norddeutschen Landschaft ;). Das wird natürlich auch gepostet!

Big city

This is my latest work for the DSFDF blog.
I find the subject matter quite interesting and that is probably why it took me only about three to four hours to finish it. I tried to evoke that kind of feeling you get when standing between these shadow-casting buildings. Creating a sense of distance is also what I was trying to achieve. This is established by using lighter blues in the background. Hope you like it, like I do ;)

Hier kommt mein neuestes Bild für den Blog DSFDF.
Mich hat das Thema interessiert, daher war es kein Wunder, dass ich bloß drei oder vier Stunden für die Erstellung gebraucht habe. Ich wollte das Gefühl wiedergeben, das ich immer in solch einer beeindruckenden Umgebung habe. Da mir in meinen Bildern die Tiefenwirkung wichtig ist, habe ich mit den heller werdenden Blautönen gearbeitet. Ist mir ganz gut gelungen, wie ich finde ;)

Here is my impression of the beach scene! My imagination was easily caught by the man standing in the water. He looked so relaxed and happy, breathing the fresh air of the sea.
I did the painting with the positive looking guy, but then ... I thought that I didn't like the sky I painted. So I repainted it. It is much better now, cause it's just the way the sky looks on a sunny day ..., ever realized?

Hier kommt mein persönlicher Eindruck der Strandszene! Der Mann im Wasser hat mich sofort interessiert, er sieht so entspannt und glücklich aus, man spürt, dass er die frische Luft am Meer genießt.
Also habe ich mit dem Bild angefangen, aber irgendwie hat mir der Himmel nicht gefallen. Darum habe ich ihn nochmal übergemalt und meiner Fantasie dabei freien Lauf gelassen. Jetzt gefällt er mir viel besser, denn er ist tatsächlich so, wie der Himmel bei uns an einem sonnigen Tag aussieht - schon mal mitbekommen?

Hi folks,

now it is finally done! I created a blog myself. I have to admit that it took me quite a while to get started, mostly due to some kind of insecurity. I was more interested in scanning other people's blogs. I decided that this is quite selfish and it keeps me in from becoming a famous artist ;)

I will start by showing my contributions to the incredible blog hosted by Karin Jurick, Different Strokes from Different Folks, and explain why and how I did the paintings.

This is my latest work for the DSFDF challenge.

Here I tried a new design approach: I changed the value scheme and used a light value for the sushi sauce and the upper background. Furthermore, the sauce reminded me of a lake with reflections of the sky. So I followed that idea: the food became mountains. I do have a preference for interesting shapes and liked the shape of the sauce. To keep the whole painting together I formed similar ones like clouds in the sky.

I did this painting with pastels, just like the one before, called "Der Preis der Schönheit", which means "Price of beauty".

This painting is my representation of the wigs challenge. I was mainly interested in the expression of the faces - especially the one in the middle which seemed to be a little bit envious of her neighbour ... What's more I found these XL glasses somehow ridiculous in contrast to the beautiful heads. That's why I had to paint those three women ;)
